The journey to a peaceful Nigeria, according to First Lady Oluremi Tinubu, begins much closer to home — with the words, choices and actions of ordinary citizens.

Mrs Tinubu made the call as Nigeria joined the global community on Monday to mark the 2026 International Day of Peace, themed “Invest in Peace: For Everyone, Everywhere, Every Day.”

The First Lady urged Nigerians to reject division and embrace values capable of strengthening peaceful coexistence, including tolerance, patience, justice, mutual respect and dialogue.

She stressed that peace should not be regarded simply as the absence of conflict, but as something that must be deliberately nurtured in everyday life.

“Peace begins in our homes and extends to our schools, workplaces, and communities. It is strengthened through tolerance, patience, justice, mutual respect, and dialogue,” she said.

According to her, individuals and communities have important roles to play in creating and sustaining a peaceful society.

She therefore encouraged Nigerians to avoid attitudes and actions that could deepen divisions, while promoting values that unite the country.

“I encourage all Nigerians to reject division and embrace the values that unite us as one people. Let us invest in peace through our words, choices, and actions every day,” she added.

The First Lady also called on Nigerians to make peaceful conduct part of their daily lives, extending from the family to schools, workplaces and communities.

The International Day of Peace is observed annually on September 21 to promote peace and non-violence.
