A 40-year-old Nigerian man, Olatunde Olaleye, has been shot dead at a bar in Mamelodi, Pretoria, South Africa, following an alleged disagreement over a drinking glass.

Olaleye, who was from Ikere-Ekiti in Ekiti State, was reportedly on duty at Spanata Bar and Grills on Monday, September 21, when the incident occurred.

The Nigerian Union in South Africa (NUSA) confirmed his death in a statement issued by its president-general, Smart Nwobi.

According to Nwobi, reports indicate that a South African national allegedly shot Olaleye after a disagreement over whether a drinking glass could be taken outside the bar.

There were also reports that the alleged shooter later returned to the premises and threatened the bar’s management, claiming members of his group would return.

Olaleye, who is survived by his wife and two children, has reportedly left his family devastated.

NUSA has called for a thorough and impartial investigation into the circumstances surrounding the killing and urged the Nigerian Mission in South Africa to engage the country’s authorities through diplomatic channels.

The union also appealed for stronger measures to protect Nigerians living in South Africa and ensure that those responsible are brought to justice.
