Former Paris Saint-Germain midfielder Jérôme Rothen has accused Real Madrid forward Kylian Mbappé of engaging in a campaign to secure votes for the 2026 Ballon d’Or.
Rothen made the allegation while discussing this year’s award race on RMC Sport, questioning Mbappé’s recent public comments about his chances of winning the prestigious individual prize.
Mbappé is among the 30 players shortlisted for the 2026 Ballon d’Or and has openly expressed his belief that he deserves the award after what he considers a strong year for both club and country.
The France international recently told RFI that he would be disappointed if he failed to win, stressing that his competitive nature made him determined to claim the honour.
Rothen interpreted those comments as part of a deliberate publicity campaign aimed at influencing voters.
The former PSG player said Mbappé was effectively trying to “buy votes” through the public promotion of his Ballon d’Or case, while also claiming that people within football circles were discussing the campaign surrounding the Real Madrid star.
However, Rothen did not provide evidence that Mbappé or his representatives had actually paid voters or offered them financial incentives. His comments were presented as an accusation and interpretation of Mbappé’s public campaign.
Mbappé faces competition from several high-profile players in the race, including Barcelona youngster Lamine Yamal, Manchester City midfielder Rodri, Bayern Munich forward Harry Kane and Paris Saint-Germain winger Khvicha Kvaratskhelia.
The controversy adds another layer to an increasingly competitive Ballon d’Or race, with Mbappé’s performances and public confidence placing him firmly among the leading names under discussion.
