Three women have been killed and another person injured after gunmen attacked a mining site in Rakum community, Barkin Ladi Local Government Area of Plateau State.

The attack reportedly occurred on Monday at about 4pm, when the assailants stormed the mining site and opened fire on workers before fleeing the area.

Rwang Tengwong, spokesman for the Berom Youth Moulders Association, confirmed the incident, saying three women lost their lives while another person sustained injuries.

A community member, John Silas, also confirmed the attack, expressing concern over the safety of people working in the area.

The incident has further raised fears among residents amid a series of attacks recently reported in parts of Plateau State, including Mangu, Barkin Ladi, Riyom and Bokkos Local Government Areas.

Tengwong called on security agencies to track down the attackers and ensure that those responsible are arrested and prosecuted.

The latest attack occurred despite a curfew imposed by the Plateau State Government. On Saturday, six people were reportedly killed in Laja village, Mangu, while vigilantes were also killed at their duty post in Kikyo village during the curfew period.

Other attacks have recently been reported in Cantoma and Bin-Per villages in Mangu and Kasa village in Barkin Ladi.

As of Monday, security agencies had not issued an official statement on the mining site attack. The Plateau State Police Command spokesman, Alabo Alfred, was also unavailable for comment when contacted.
