The Federal Government has given a newly inaugurated committee 90 days to develop a comprehensive assessment of Nigeria’s security threats and a five-year strategic plan for the country’s defence operations.
The committee was inaugurated on Wednesday in Abuja by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume, on behalf of President Bola Tinubu. It is expected to submit the two documents to the President for consideration and approval at the end of its mandate.
The initiative is aimed at providing the government and security agencies with a coordinated framework for identifying emerging threats and strengthening Nigeria’s response to insecurity.
The National Threat Assessment is expected to provide a broad examination of the security challenges confronting the country, while the five-year Strategic Defence Operations Plan will outline the priorities and operational direction of the nation’s defence architecture.
The committee’s assignment comes amid persistent security challenges across several parts of the country, including terrorism, banditry, kidnapping and other forms of violent crime.
The government’s decision to develop a long-term defence plan is therefore expected to help security agencies move beyond short-term responses and adopt a more coordinated approach to national security.
The committee will be required to examine existing threats, identify emerging security risks and recommend strategies that can strengthen the country’s capacity to prevent and respond to attacks.
The final documents are expected to guide government policy and defence operations over the coming years, while providing a framework for better coordination among the various security institutions.
With only 90 days to complete the assignment, the committee faces a tight deadline to produce recommendations capable of addressing Nigeria’s changing security environment.
The Federal Government is expected to consider the committee’s submissions as part of broader efforts to improve national security and protect the lives and property of Nigerians.
