Former Anambra State Governor and 2023 presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has mourned American country music legend Dolly Parton, describing her humility, compassion and commitment to humanity as defining features of her legacy.
Obi, in a message shared on his X account on Wednesday, said Parton’s impact extended well beyond her successful music career, noting that her fame and wealth never disconnected her from the humble circumstances of her upbringing.
According to Obi, Parton’s childhood in rural Tennessee, where she grew up in a large family with limited financial resources, helped shape the values of resilience, faith, love and strong family ties that remained evident throughout her life.
He said the singer’s ability to remain connected to her roots was one of the qualities that distinguished her despite her extraordinary success.
Obi noted that Parton’s music connected deeply with millions of people because she addressed issues familiar to ordinary people, including love, heartbreak, hardship, loneliness and hope.
He added that her songs gave visibility and dignity to people whose experiences were often overlooked.
Beyond her musical achievements, Obi praised Parton for her generosity and concern for children, disadvantaged people and other vulnerable members of society.
He said her story demonstrated that achieving wealth and global recognition should not require an individual to abandon the experiences and values that shaped them.
For Obi, Parton’s greatest achievement was therefore not simply her status as an internationally celebrated musician, but the manner in which she used her success to remain connected to people and causes close to her heart.
He described her as an example of how humility and compassion can survive alongside fame, adding that her life offered an enduring lesson about remembering one’s origins.
The tribute comes as admirers around the world continue to reflect on Parton’s contribution to music and her wider humanitarian legacy.
