The Rivers State Police Command has detained several police officers following the alleged shooting and death of a commercial driver in Port Harcourt, an incident that has sparked protests and public concern.

The command said the officers were taken into custody as investigations continue to establish the circumstances surrounding the death of the driver, identified as Anthony Obodo.

How the incident happened

According to the police, the incident occurred on Thursday after an altercation between Obodo and some police officers.

The command’s spokesperson, ASP Blessing Agabe, said the disagreement reportedly escalated into a physical confrontation, during which a firearm was discharged.

The bullet allegedly struck Obodo, resulting in his death.

Two other people who were reportedly passing through the area were also injured during the incident.

Alleged shooter attacked by mob

Police identified the officer who allegedly fired the shot as Cpl. Alfred Louis.

The command said Louis was subsequently attacked by an angry mob and sustained multiple injuries.

He is currently receiving medical attention while the investigation continues.

The officer and members of his team have been detained at the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID) in Rivers State.

Police promise investigation

The Rivers State Police Command said the investigation will determine exactly what happened and whether any officers should face disciplinary or legal action.

Agabe said the command would not protect officers found to have engaged in unlawful or unethical conduct.

She also condemned the killing, stressing that the alleged conduct was inconsistent with the level of professionalism expected from members of the Nigeria Police Force.

Protests erupt across Rivers

The shooting triggered protests in parts of Rivers State on Friday as residents expressed anger over the death.

Police subsequently deployed personnel to affected areas in an effort to restore calm, maintain public order and prevent further disturbances.

The incident has once again raised concerns about police use of firearms, interactions between security personnel and civilians, and the need for accountability when allegations of excessive or unlawful force arise.

Investigation will determine next steps

For the family and associates of Anthony Obodo, the immediate concern is obtaining answers over how the commercial driver lost his life.

For the police, the investigation will determine whether the officers involved acted within the law and established operational procedures.

The detention of the officers represents the first step in the process, but the credibility of the investigation and any subsequent disciplinary or legal action will be closely watched by the public.
