The National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has re-arrested an 83-year-old woman, Uloma Uchechi Sunday, in Abia State over alleged drug-related offences, barely a year after she was convicted of a similar crime.

The agency disclosed that the woman was arrested on October 7, 2026, at her residence in Ite-Uzo, Umuaguma, Obingwa Local Government Area of Abia State.

According to the NDLEA, operatives recovered methamphetamine and Colorado, a synthetic cannabis substance, allegedly concealed around her waist with a wrapper during the operation.

The agency’s spokesperson, Femi Babafemi, said the arrest followed intelligence reports indicating that the woman was allegedly operating a drug joint frequented by individuals accused of terrorising members of the community.

Sunday was previously arrested on May 17, 2025, alongside her 32-year-old daughter, Chisom Uchechi, at the same residence. During that operation, NDLEA operatives recovered 50 grammes of methamphetamine, 522 grammes of skunk, 260 grammes of fresh cannabis leaves and 12 grammes of tramadol.

The agency said both women pleaded guilty to the offences and were sentenced to 12 months’ imprisonment or an option of a ₦200,000 fine each. They reportedly paid the fines and were released.

However, the NDLEA alleged that Sunday returned to the illicit drug trade after her release, eventually establishing a drug joint at her residence.

The latest arrest forms part of the agency’s ongoing efforts to combat drug trafficking and the distribution of illicit substances across the country. The NDLEA has yet to disclose the outcome of any fresh legal proceedings against the octogenarian.
