The family of Abdulrahman Auwal, a Mobile Police (MOPOL) officer killed in Plateau State, has called on the Inspector-General of Police to investigate the circumstances surrounding his death and ensure that justice is served.
Auwal was reportedly attacked along Kwi-Beco Road, between Barkin Ladi and Riyom Local Government Areas of the state, while returning from a community service.
His mother, Larai Musa, said the family was struggling to understand how her son was killed and urged police authorities to provide clear answers to the questions surrounding the incident.
Speaking to Daily Trust on Sunday, Musa said reports indicated that her son was attacked with a machete while riding on a motorcycle with a commercial motorcyclist.
She questioned why the officer was killed while the rider reportedly survived the attack, demanding to know who stopped them and what transpired before the incident.
The grieving mother also called on the motorcyclist, who reportedly took her son to obtain foodstuffs, to explain the circumstances leading to the killing.
Although she acknowledged her belief in the will of Allah, Musa insisted that the family deserved answers about the loss of their son.
The family further expressed disappointment over the alleged absence of police officers and the deceased’s colleagues, who they said had yet to visit them to offer condolences four days after the incident.
Auwal was buried at Zaria Cemetery in Jos on Saturday.
As of the time of the report, the Plateau State Police Command had not issued an official statement explaining the circumstances surrounding his death.
The family is now appealing to the police leadership to conduct a thorough investigation, establish what happened and bring anyone found responsible to justice.
