The Abia State Government has entered into a strategic partnership with Spanish football league LaLiga and the Spanish Embassy in Nigeria to promote youth empowerment and talent development through sports.
The initiative, tagged LaLiga Week in Abia State, is scheduled to take place between November and December 2026. It will feature a series of sporting activities and engagements aimed at identifying local talent, improving skills and creating opportunities for young people to access international sporting platforms.
The Commissioner for Information, Prince Okey Kanu, disclosed this while briefing journalists in Umuahia on the outcome of the State Executive Council meeting chaired by Governor Alex Otti.
According to Kanu, the collaboration with LaLiga and the Spanish Embassy represents one of the state government’s strategies for empowering young people through sports.
The programme is expected to provide a platform for grassroots talent development and expose aspiring athletes to opportunities that could support their sporting careers.
In a related development, Kanu said the Ministry of Youths and Sports had visited correctional centres in Aba and Umuahia as part of the government’s welfare and rehabilitation efforts.
He explained that the visits identified 20 inmates requiring different forms of support, including legal assistance, medical care and family support. The inmates were also being prepared for pre-school, non-residential certificate examinations.
The commissioner added that an assessment of skills acquisition programmes at the facilities revealed shortages of tools, equipment and materials, which were affecting the effectiveness of rehabilitation initiatives.
The state government is expected to continue its efforts to improve youth development and rehabilitation through partnerships, skills training and other empowerment programmes.
