Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has launched a ₦1 billion economic empowerment programme targeting 5,000 beneficiaries in Edo State, alongside the inauguration of 50 Compressed Natural Gas (CNG) buses.

The initiatives were unveiled on Thursday, October 15, 2026, during her visit to Benin City, where she commended Governor Monday Okpebholo for introducing programmes aimed at improving residents’ welfare and supporting economic growth.

Under the empowerment scheme, each of the 5,000 beneficiaries is expected to receive ₦200,000 to support small businesses, strengthen livelihoods and promote financial independence.

Mrs Tinubu urged the beneficiaries to make productive use of the financial assistance to expand their businesses and improve their economic circumstances.

She also praised the state government for investing in initiatives designed to create opportunities for women, young people and vulnerable groups.

The First Lady said the inauguration of the 50 CNG-powered buses would help improve public transportation, while the empowerment programme would provide financial support for small-scale entrepreneurs.

Earlier, Governor Okpebholo described the initiatives as part of his administration’s efforts to address transportation challenges and improve access to economic opportunities, particularly for women and traders.

He expressed optimism that the buses would make public transport more accessible and affordable, while the empowerment scheme would help beneficiaries grow their businesses and support their families.

The governor also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to inclusive development and thanked President Bola Tinubu for his support.

The impact of the programmes will depend on effective implementation, the distribution of funds to eligible beneficiaries and the availability of reliable public transportation services.
