The traditional ruler of Daffo community in Bokkos Local Government Area of Plateau State, Da Jatau Yohanna Samkwar, has died after suspected gunmen attacked his residence, raising fresh concerns over insecurity in the area.
Samkwar, known as the Mishkaham Bokkos, was reportedly attacked on the night of Monday, 12 October, when assailants invaded his residence and shot him.
He was initially taken to a hospital in Daffo for treatment before being referred to another medical facility, where he reportedly died on Wednesday, 14 October.
Kefas Mallai, chairman of the Community Peace Observers in Bokkos, confirmed the incident and expressed concern over recurring attacks in the area.
The killing reportedly occurred a day after the traditional ruler’s son regained his freedom following an earlier abduction, according to community accounts.
The incident has heightened anxiety among residents, who have continued to face security challenges despite efforts to maintain their daily activities.
Mallai also disclosed a separate attack involving three people travelling on a motorcycle along a road connecting communities in the area. Two people were reportedly killed, while the third sustained injuries.
Community leaders have raised concerns about the frequency of attacks and the safety of residents travelling between villages, calling for stronger security measures.
Although the Mwaghavul Traditional Council reportedly identified the attackers as Fulani militias, the identities of those responsible have not been independently established.
The latest killing adds to growing concerns over violence in Plateau State, where repeated attacks have threatened lives, livelihoods and the security of rural communities.
Residents are now looking to security agencies and government authorities to strengthen protection and prevent further bloodshed.
