Bayern Munich manager Vincent Kompany has defended his players following consecutive draws, insisting that the German champions are close to rediscovering their best form despite recent defensive concerns.
Bayern were held to a 2-2 draw by Augsburg in the Bundesliga before playing out a thrilling 3-3 stalemate against Norwegian side Viking in the Champions League. The results have raised questions about the team’s defensive organization and their ability to convert chances into victories.
However, Kompany believes the performances offer reasons for optimism, particularly given the number of opportunities his side created in both matches.
“We want to attack,” the Belgian coach said during Friday’s pre-match press conference. “In the last two matches, we shot 50 times on goal. If we do a few things better, then we are not too far from our very best version.”
Bayern had to fight back from behind in both encounters, exposing weaknesses at the back despite their attacking threat.
Kompany acknowledged the need for improvement but stressed that his players remained motivated and were working hard in training to address the problems.
He also urged the squad to put the disappointing results behind them and focus on the challenges ahead.
“We’ve got a process. We discuss things as a team or with individuals. It’s important to draw a line under things quickly. Now we go to the next game,” he said.
Tough Fixtures Await Bayern
Bayern face RB Leipzig at home on Saturday as they seek to return to winning ways. The match begins a demanding period that includes a Champions League meeting with Arsenal, a Bundesliga clash against Freiburg and a showdown with Borussia Dortmund.
They will also face Magdeburg in the German Cup.
Kompany described the upcoming fixtures as opportunities for his team to demonstrate its quality against strong opposition.
“These moments that some people think might be difficult, we say these are the best moments you can have in your career,” he said, adding that winning such matches could create memorable moments for the club.
The Bayern coach also warned that Leipzig would pose a serious threat, pointing to their confidence and attacking quality, particularly out wide.
Meanwhile, goalkeeper Manuel Neuer had not trained ahead of the Leipzig fixture because of a foot problem. Midfielder Aleksandar Pavlović had trained normally on Thursday, with his availability dependent on completing another full session.
Bayern will hope their response on the pitch matches Kompany’s confidence as they look to end their run of draws and strengthen their position in the Bundesliga title race.
