Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has led members of the Rivers State House of Assembly and the state’s 23 local government council chairmen to a closed-door meeting with Governor Siminalayi Fubara as efforts to consolidate reconciliation between the two political camps continue.

The meeting took place at Fubara’s private residence in Port Harcourt on Sunday evening, with the delegation including the Speaker of the Rivers Assembly, Martin Amaewhule, and the All Progressives Congress (APC) governorship candidate, Kingsley Chinda.

Other members of the Rainbow Coalition and political supporters from both camps also attended the engagement.

Although the specific agenda was not officially disclosed, the meeting is believed to be part of ongoing efforts to resolve the prolonged political crisis that has divided Rivers State’s leadership for more than two years.

According to reports, the gathering was a continuation of previous discussions aimed at rebuilding relationships between Wike’s camp and Fubara’s supporters ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Fresh Signs of Reconciliation

The meeting marked the first time Wike and the lawmakers had visited Fubara at his residence as part of the current reconciliation process.

At the end of the engagement, Wike, Fubara and other participants were seen smiling as they exchanged greetings and posed for photographs.

A video from the gathering also showed Amaewhule and other lawmakers greeting the governor, shaking his hand and addressing him as “Your Excellency”.

The cordial atmosphere offered another indication that both camps were working to ease tensions following years of political confrontation.

However, neither Wike nor Fubara publicly disclosed the details of the discussions or announced any formal agreement arising from the meeting.

Political Crisis That Shook Rivers State

The disagreement between Wike, Fubara and members of the Rivers State House of Assembly began shortly after Fubara assumed office in 2023.

The dispute escalated into a major political crisis, with lawmakers aligned with Wike initiating impeachment proceedings against the governor on separate occasions.

The confrontation eventually prompted President Bola Tinubu to declare a state of emergency in Rivers State in March 2025, resulting in the suspension of the governor, his deputy and the state assembly for six months.

Although elected officials subsequently returned to office, tensions between the political camps continued to affect relationships within the state’s political establishment.

2027 Elections in Focus

The latest meeting comes as political leaders begin positioning themselves ahead of the 2027 elections.

Wike has been working to bring members of the divided political groups together, while Kingsley Chinda has emerged as the APC’s governorship candidate in Rivers State.

Reports indicate that the reconciliation effort is intended to build a common political front, although questions remain about how Fubara’s loyalists will be accommodated in the emerging arrangement.

Whether the latest engagement will produce a lasting settlement remains to be seen. For now, the meeting represents another attempt to put the prolonged feud behind the state’s political leadership.
