The Kwankwasiyya movement has criticized the African Democratic Congress (ADC) and former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar, accusing them of failing to clearly communicate what they intend to offer Nigerians ahead of the 2027 presidential election.
The movement’s spokesperson, Dr Habibu Sale Mohammed, made the remarks during an interview on Daily Trust TV’s Day Break programme on Monday, while reacting to the growing political disagreement between the ADC and the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC).
The controversy followed comments by the NDC’s vice-presidential candidate, Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso, ruling out an alliance with the ADC ahead of the next general election.
Mohammed argued that political parties should concentrate on presenting their policies, ideas and leadership capabilities to voters rather than blaming their electoral challenges on politicians who decline to join them.
He alleged that the ADC had calculated that securing the support of Kwankwaso and Peter Obi would strengthen Atiku’s chances of winning the presidency, regardless of whether Nigerians considered him the most suitable candidate.
According to the Kwankwasiyya spokesperson, the ADC should explain its plans for addressing the country’s challenges instead of relying on the political influence of prominent opposition figures.
Mohammed further accused the party of struggling to deal with the implications of Obi and Kwankwaso remaining outside its political fold.
He also rejected suggestions portraying Kwankwaso as secretly working in favour of President Bola Tinubu, alleging that the narrative was being used to influence public perception of the former Kano State governor.
The spokesperson faulted claims that the ADC’s electoral prospects could suffer because Kwankwaso and Obi refused to join the party, insisting that political parties must take responsibility for presenting convincing alternatives to voters.
Defending the relationship between Kwankwaso and Obi, Mohammed maintained that their political partnership was based on a shared understanding rather than a temporary arrangement.
He said Kwankwaso was entitled to speak publicly about the partnership, arguing that both politicians had agreed to work together.
Mohammed also claimed that the two politicians previously left the ADC because, in his view, the party had failed to provide a level playing field for its members and presidential aspirants.
He alleged that the ADC had become a vehicle for Atiku’s presidential ambition, arguing that Nigerians deserved a credible alternative in the 2027 election.
The comments come amid increasing tension among opposition politicians as different parties and political blocs position themselves ahead of the presidential contest.
With disagreements over alliances, candidates and political strategy continuing to surface, the ability of opposition parties to present a united front remains a major question ahead of the election.
The ADC had yet to respond to the latest allegations at the time of the report.
