Nigerian gospel singer and evangelist Tope Alabi has threatened legal action against individuals who publish or circulate false and defamatory statements about her, warning that those who share such content online could also face legal consequences.

The warning was contained in a public notice issued on Friday, October 23, 2026, by her solicitors, Oakmount Legal Practitioners, following concerns over alleged misleading statements circulating about the singer.

In the notice shared by Alabi on Instagram, the legal firm said the gospel minister had spent nearly three decades building her professional reputation, describing it as an asset protected by law.

The lawyers warned that anyone who publishes statements they know to be false, malicious or damaging to her reputation could be held personally liable, whether the content appears in written publications, videos, audio recordings, podcasts, interviews or social media posts.

They also cautioned that liability could extend beyond the original creator to people who repost, forward, share or otherwise amplify the disputed material, depending on the circumstances and applicable legal defences.

The solicitors further warned that using anonymous or pseudonymous social media accounts does not automatically shield individuals from legal responsibility.

According to the notice, Alabi has instructed her lawyers to pursue available legal remedies against anyone whose conduct gives rise to an actionable claim.

Possible remedies include damages, court orders preventing further publication, retractions, public apologies and recovery of legal costs where permitted by law.

The firm also directed anyone who had already published the disputed material to remove it and refrain from further circulation, while noting that deleting a post would not automatically eliminate potential liability for its earlier publication.

However, the notice did not identify the specific publications or allegations that prompted the warning.

It also clarified that the action was not intended to suppress lawful expression, including truthful statements, fair comment on matters of public interest and other speech protected by law.

The development comes amid online controversy surrounding reports of Alabi’s comments on traditional religious practices and renewed public discussion of her past association with the late cleric Elijah Ajanaku.

The singer’s warning serves as a reminder to bloggers and social media users to verify claims before publishing or sharing potentially damaging allegations about others.
