Former super-middleweight world champion George Groves has advised Anthony Joshua to seek guidance from boxing legend Mike Tyson as he prepares for his highly anticipated heavyweight showdown with Tyson Fury.
Joshua and Fury are scheduled to meet on December 11 at the Principality Stadium in Cardiff, Wales, in a contest expected to attract global attention and settle their long-running rivalry.
Groves believes Joshua may need to adopt a different tactical approach to overcome Fury, who possesses a height and reach advantage over his British rival.
Groves Recommends Tyson’s Signature Fighting Style
Speaking to Grosvenor Sport, Groves suggested that Joshua could benefit from studying the aggressive, close-range approach that made Mike Tyson one of boxing’s most recognisable heavyweight champions.
He recommended that Joshua incorporate elements of Tyson’s famous “peek-a-boo” style, which involves crouching, slipping punches, moving the head and launching powerful hooks and uppercuts while advancing towards an opponent.
“I think Anthony Joshua should bring Mike Tyson in to come up with the plan to beat Tyson Fury,” Groves said.
He argued that Tyson’s experience of fighting taller opponents could offer Joshua useful tactical lessons as he prepares for the challenge posed by Fury.
Joshua and Fury Enter the Fight After Victories
Both heavyweights head into the proposed December encounter following victories in their previous outings.
Fury recorded a stoppage win over Polish veteran Mariusz Wach, while Joshua recovered from two knockdowns to defeat Kristian Prenga.
Despite Joshua’s victory, Groves believes Fury’s physical advantages could prove decisive. He predicted that Fury could stop Joshua within the opening three rounds if he establishes his range and lands clean punches early in the contest.
Mike Tyson Has Already Expressed Support for Fury
However, Groves’ suggestion could face a practical obstacle: Mike Tyson has publicly expressed support for Fury ahead of the heavyweight clash.
Speaking to Piers Morgan about the contest, the former heavyweight champion said he would be backing Fury, adding that it would be nice to see him defeat Joshua.
There has been no confirmed announcement that Mike Tyson has agreed to join Joshua’s training team. Groves’ proposal remains advice on how the former two-time unified heavyweight champion could prepare for one of the biggest fights of his career.
The December showdown is expected to be a major moment in British heavyweight boxing, with both fighters seeking to establish their superiority after years of anticipation surrounding a potential meeting.
