The Inspector-General of Police, Kayode Egbetokun, has approved the disbursement of ₦2.3 billion to the families of police officers who lost their lives in the line of duty.
The payment is part of efforts by the Nigeria Police Force to provide financial support to the dependants of officers who died while serving the country.
The beneficiaries include families of deceased police personnel whose entitlements had been processed under the appropriate welfare and insurance arrangements.
The IGP said the initiative reflects the commitment of the police leadership to improving the welfare of officers and their families, particularly those who make the ultimate sacrifice in the course of protecting lives and property.
Egbetokun stressed that officers should be confident that their families would not be abandoned if they lost their lives while carrying out their responsibilities.
The financial support is also expected to assist affected families in meeting pressing needs and coping with the loss of their loved ones.
The police authorities have continued to emphasise welfare as an important component of efforts to boost officers’ morale and improve their effectiveness in carrying out their duties.
The disbursement of the ₦2.3 billion further underscores the need for sustained welfare programmes for police personnel and their dependants, particularly in view of the risks associated with law enforcement duties.
