Abia State Governor Alex Otti has defended President Bola Tinubu’s economic policies, arguing that the administration inherited significant economic challenges that made reforms necessary.
Otti cited high inflation, rising unemployment, mounting national debt and the previous administration’s reliance on Ways and Means financing as some of the difficulties confronting the country before Tinubu assumed office in May 2023.
He described the unification of the foreign exchange rates and the removal of the petrol subsidy as courageous decisions, arguing that the subsidy system had become vulnerable to abuse and was placing a heavy burden on government finances.
However, the Abia governor acknowledged that the reforms have brought significant hardship, particularly for millions of Nigerians already struggling with poverty and the rising cost of living.
According to Otti, the effects of the policies cannot be reversed overnight, stressing that sustained implementation would be necessary for the economy to recover.
He expressed optimism that Nigeria could experience improvements over time if the government remained committed to the reforms without compromising their objectives.
Otti’s comments add to the ongoing national debate over Tinubu’s economic agenda, with supporters pointing to the need for structural reforms while critics continue to question their impact on ordinary Nigerians.
Do you agree with Governor Alex Otti that Tinubu’s economic reforms need more time to deliver results, or should the government reconsider some of its policies?
