TINUBU’S NIGHTMARE? APC POWER STRUGGLE DEEPENS AS ROCHAS, UZODIMMA, WIKE AND AKPABIO FACE A POLITICAL TEST

The unfolding dispute over the APC senatorial ticket in Imo State has raised fresh questions about the party’s internal power dynamics and the political calculations ahead of the 2027 general election.

At the centre of the controversy are Imo State Governor Hope Uzodimma, former governor Rochas Okorocha, FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and Senate President Godswill Akpabio — four influential political figures whose interests could become entangled as the battle over the party’s future direction intensifies.

ROCHAS OKOROCHA AND HOPE UZODIMMA: THE IMMEDIATE BATTLE

The dispute between Uzodimma and Okorocha centres on the APC senatorial ticket for Imo West. Okorocha has challenged the primary election outcome, insisting that he was the rightful winner, while the party’s announced result had favoured Uzodimma.

A Federal High Court ruling in Abuja has now added a new dimension to the dispute, with the court ruling in Okorocha’s favour. The development represents a significant legal setback for Uzodimma, although the possibility of an appeal means the political and legal contest may not be over.

The case also highlights the divisions that can emerge within political parties when rival camps dispute the outcome of internal elections.

WIKE’S ROLE AND THE QUESTION OF POLITICAL LOYALTY

Wike remains an influential figure in the Tinubu administration despite belonging to a different political party. His relationships with key political actors, particularly in Rivers State, have attracted attention amid the prolonged political dispute involving Governor Siminalayi Fubara.

Claims that Wike is working to frustrate Uzodimma’s senatorial ambition, or that a coalition is being deployed for that purpose, require independent confirmation. Nevertheless, any serious disagreement among prominent political figures aligned with the presidency could complicate efforts to maintain cohesion across different political interests.

AKPABIO AND THE SENATE PRESIDENCY QUESTION

Akpabio occupies a critical position as President of the Senate, where the administration requires cooperation to advance its legislative agenda.

However, the suggestion that Uzodimma intends to replace Akpabio as Senate President remains a political claim rather than an established outcome. Securing a senatorial ticket, winning an election and obtaining the support of fellow senators for the presidency of the Senate are separate processes.

Even so, the emergence of competing ambitions among influential members of the governing political establishment could generate questions about succession, influence and the balance of power within the party.

WHAT DOES THIS MEAN FOR TINUBU?

The president faces the challenge of managing competing interests within the political coalition supporting his administration. A dispute involving prominent allies can create pressure to balance personal relationships, party unity, legal decisions and electoral calculations.

Backing one camp could disappoint another, while allowing the dispute to continue unchecked could deepen internal divisions. However, it would be premature to conclude that any of the figures involved is preparing to abandon the president or sabotage his political interests without concrete evidence.

The most immediate issue is the legal status of the Imo West ticket and whether the ruling will stand if challenged on appeal. The broader political implications will depend on how the APC leadership responds and whether the competing camps accept the eventual outcome.

For now, the dispute offers a revealing glimpse into the challenges of managing a party that brings together politicians with different ambitions and power bases.

The central question is whether the APC can resolve the dispute through its legal and internal mechanisms without allowing the disagreement to spill into a wider struggle over influence ahead of 2027.
