Omoyele Sowore has renewed his criticism of former Anambra State Governor Peter Obi, accusing him of failing to adequately address healthcare challenges during his eight-year tenure.

Sowore, the presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), made the allegations in a post on X on Friday, October 30, claiming that a doctors’ strike in Anambra State during Obi’s administration lasted for 13 months.

He described Obi as a “packaged fraud” and questioned his promise to establish primary healthcare facilities in every ward if elected president in 2027.

According to Sowore, the prolonged industrial action raised questions about Obi’s record in healthcare delivery while he governed Anambra State.

He also alleged that Obi prioritised keeping state funds in financial institutions over building hospitals, although the accusation remains Sowore’s claim.

The latest exchange follows a confrontation between the two politicians at the Nigerian Bar Association’s annual conference in Port Harcourt in August, where Sowore criticised Obi over the prolonged doctors’ strike.

During the discussion, Obi addressed the dispute and questioned the circumstances surrounding the industrial action. He argued that his administration had made investments in healthcare infrastructure and medical education.

Obi also stated that when he assumed office, Anambra lacked an accredited school of nursing, while several healthcare institutions faced accreditation challenges. He maintained that his administration subsequently supported the development of medical training institutions and teaching hospitals.

The dispute has brought renewed attention to the record of Obi’s administration, particularly its handling of public healthcare and the circumstances that led to the prolonged strike.

With political activities gradually building towards the 2027 general election, the exchange also reflects growing scrutiny of the records of former officeholders seeking national leadership.
