Human rights activist and African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate Omoyele Sowore has reported an alleged attack by suspected political thugs inside a restaurant in Ado-Ekiti, Ekiti State.

Sowore disclosed the incident in a brief statement posted on his official Facebook page on Friday, October 30, 2026, raising fresh concerns about the safety of political figures as preparations for the 2027 general elections gather momentum.

“Thugs just attacked us inside a restaurant in Ado Ekiti,” the activist wrote.

The statement suggested that Sowore was not alone when the incident occurred, although he did not provide further details about the number of people involved, the circumstances leading to the confrontation or whether anyone sustained injuries.

Police Yet to Confirm Incident

As of the time the report was published, the Ekiti State Police Command had not officially confirmed the alleged attack.

It was also unclear whether any suspects had been arrested or whether a formal investigation had commenced.

Further details about the identities of the alleged attackers and their possible motives were not immediately available.

Sowore, a prominent activist and publisher of Sahara Reporters, has frequently criticised government officials and political leaders over governance, corruption and human rights issues.

His latest allegation comes as political activities increase ahead of the 2027 elections, with parties and aspirants stepping up mobilisation and campaign engagements.

Fresh Concerns Over Political Safety

The reported incident has raised questions about the safety of politicians and activists participating in political activities, particularly in situations where disagreements could escalate into violence.

Any attack on a political figure, regardless of party affiliation, raises concerns about citizens’ ability to participate freely in democratic activities without fear of intimidation or physical harm.

However, with the circumstances of the reported incident still unclear and no official police confirmation available at the time of publication, claims about the attackers’ identities, political affiliations or motives remain unverified.

Further information from Sowore, witnesses or security authorities may help establish what happened inside the restaurant.
