The Kano State chapter of the All Progressives Congress (APC) has accused former Kano State Governor Rabiu Musa Kwankwaso of attempting to blackmail the party and Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf over the controversy surrounding the eligibility of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) governorship candidate, Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo, ahead of the 2027 elections.
The party described Kwankwaso’s allegations as false and baseless, insisting that neither the APC, Governor Yusuf nor the Kano State Government had any involvement in the legal proceedings that led to questions surrounding Gwarzo’s candidacy.
Kwankwaso, who is the NDC’s vice-presidential candidate, had accused the governor and his political associates of allegedly attempting to prevent his party’s candidate from participating in the forthcoming governorship election.
However, the APC rejected the allegations, maintaining that the legal dispute originated from an internal crisis within the NDC.
According to the ruling party, members of the opposition party instituted the court action against the NDC itself, rather than the APC or its governorship candidate.
The party argued that Kwankwaso was attempting to divert public attention from the internal challenges confronting his party by linking the APC and Governor Yusuf to the controversy.
It also challenged the former governor to provide credible and verifiable evidence to support his claims, warning that unsubstantiated allegations could mislead the public and heighten political tension in Kano State.
The APC further denied sponsoring, influencing or facilitating any legal action against Gwarzo, stressing that it had no interest in using state power to frustrate opposition candidates.
The party also emphasised that the judiciary operates independently and that neither the APC nor Governor Yusuf has the authority to dictate court proceedings or decisions.
It urged Kwankwaso and other political stakeholders to allow the relevant institutions to perform their constitutional responsibilities without turning disputes arising from internal party affairs into political confrontations.
The APC also called on Kano residents to disregard allegations linking the party and the governor to the legal battle, insisting that neither had any direct or indirect role in the proceedings.
The controversy comes as political activities intensify ahead of the 2027 general elections, with the NDC seeking to establish itself as a major opposition force in Kano State.
The dispute over Gwarzo’s candidacy remains a significant political issue, as both camps trade accusations over the circumstances surrounding the legal proceedings.
