Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, has criticised former Rivers State Governor Rotimi Amaechi over his comments involving his wife and late mother, accusing him of dragging family members into political disputes ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Wike made the remarks on Thursday during his monthly media chat in Abuja, reacting to Amaechi’s recent statement that he would distance himself from his wife if she became Nigeria’s president and governed the country in the same manner as President Bola Tinubu.

The FCT minister questioned why Amaechi had brought his wife into the political debate, recalling his earlier comments linking Tinubu’s economic policies to the death of his mother.

Wike argued that the former transportation minister should keep his family out of political arguments, describing his remarks about his wife as inappropriate.

He also questioned Amaechi’s position on his wife’s hypothetical presidency, insisting that there was no justification for bringing her into the ongoing political exchanges.

“Why do you have to bring your wife now into politics?” Wike asked.

The minister further raised questions about a contract involving the Niger Delta Development Commission (NDDC), asking whether it had been awarded to Amaechi’s wife and why the former governor had not taken issue with the matter at the time.

The latest exchange comes amid escalating political tensions ahead of the 2027 elections, with Amaechi, who is associated with the African Democratic Congress (ADC), increasingly critical of Tinubu’s administration.

Wike’s comments add another chapter to the longstanding political rivalry between the two former Rivers State leaders, as disagreements over governance, economic policies and political alliances continue to shape the debate ahead of the next general elections.
