Hafidh Ameir Hassan, husband of Tanzanian President Samia Suluhu Hassan and the country’s First Gentleman, has died at the age of 76.
Ameir died on Monday, September 7, 2026, at about 8:00 a.m. while receiving treatment for a heart condition at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital in Zanzibar.
Tanzania’s Vice President, Deogratius Ndejembi, announced his death and expressed condolences to President Samia, her family, relatives, friends and the people of Tanzania.
Funeral arrangements are underway in Kizimkazi, Zanzibar, where Ameir is expected to be laid to rest.
Ameir largely maintained a private life despite his wife’s prominent political position. Before becoming First Gentleman, he was known for his work in agriculture and academia.
He married Samia in 1978, and the couple had four children — three sons and a daughter. Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, is also involved in politics and serves in Zanzibar’s legislative institutions.
Ameir became Tanzania’s first First Gentleman in March 2021 after Samia became the country’s first female president following the death of President John Magufuli.
His death has prompted condolences from leaders across the region. Kenyan President William Ruto expressed sympathy to President Samia and her family, describing Ameir as a lifelong companion to the Tanzanian leader and a beloved father.
The African Union Commission Chairperson, Mahmoud Ali Youssouf, also extended condolences to President Samia, her family and the people of Tanzania following the death.
