he Oke-Ogun Council of Elders in Oyo State has appealed to politicians preparing for the 2027 elections to conduct their campaigns peacefully and avoid actions capable of threatening the security and unity of the region.

The call followed a meeting of the council in Ibadan, where members discussed security, the economy, education, politics and other issues affecting Oke-Ogun and Oyo State.

Elders seek peaceful 2027 campaigns

The council urged political aspirants to focus their campaigns on their programmes, policies and commitments to the people rather than allowing political competition to create tension or division.

It also said it plans to engage political aspirants from Oke-Ogun who have secured tickets to contest upcoming elections.

According to the elders, the aspirants will be expected to clearly explain what they intend to do for the development of the region as they seek the people’s mandate.

Oke-Ogun governor ambition

The council reaffirmed the long-standing aspiration of the Oke-Ogun people to produce the governor of Oyo State.

However, it stressed that the objective would be pursued through dialogue, constructive engagement and democratic processes, rather than confrontation.

The elders also appealed to people from the region, regardless of political affiliation, religion or social status, to work together for the development of Oke-Ogun.

Security remains a major concern

The council commended the Federal and Oyo State governments as well as security agencies following the rescue of abducted residents in Oriire Local Government Area.

It expressed hope that similar incidents would not occur again and called for the release of other people still being held in captivity.

The elders also recognised the efforts of several individuals, including retired Brigadier General Kunle Togun, Primate Samson Ojoawo and Sunday Adeyemo, popularly known as Igboho, in promoting security in the region.

Blueprint for Oke-Ogun development

Beyond politics, the council announced that it has developed an Oke-Ogun Development Blueprint (2025–2035) aimed at providing a roadmap for accelerated development across the region.

The proposed blueprint focuses on areas including unity, security, education, good governance, political representation, human capital development and sustainable development.

The elders also called for increased investment in education, skills development and human capital, particularly to create more opportunities for young people.

They further congratulated Adebayo Lawal, who recently assumed office as Acting Governor of Oyo State, and commended Governor Seyi Makinde for the smooth transfer of power during his vacation.

As political activities begin to intensify ahead of the 2027 elections, the Oke-Ogun elders’ message adds to growing calls for issue-based campaigns and peaceful political participation across Nigeria.
