The Kano State Government has announced a significant increase in the state’s minimum pension, raising it from ₦5,000 to ₦20,000 as part of measures aimed at improving the welfare of retirees.
The announcement was made during the delegates’ conference of the Nigeria Union of Pensioners in Kano. The state government was represented at the event by Deputy Governor Aminu Abdussalam Gwarzo on behalf of Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf.
According to the government, the increase is intended to provide greater financial support to pensioners and ease the pressure caused by rising living costs.
The administration also disclosed that it has cleared more than ₦16 billion in outstanding pension arrears within less than two years. It said efforts were also being made to improve the regularity of pension payments and address longstanding issues affecting pensioners.
As part of its broader pension reforms, the Kano State Government said it is working to strengthen pension administration and resolve challenges relating to pensioners’ welfare and pension-related assets.
The development is expected to provide some relief for retirees across the state, particularly those who have been receiving the previous minimum pension of ₦5,000.
The Kano government has reiterated its commitment to improving the welfare of pensioners and ensuring that retirees who served the state receive more consistent and timely pension payments.
