Gunmen have killed the All Progressives Congress (APC) Chairman in Dekina Local Government Area of Kogi State, Ishaq Yunusa, and abducted another person who was travelling with him.
The incident occurred on Thursday evening along the Itobe–Ochadamu Expressway, near Ojuwo Olijo in Ofu Local Government Area of the state.
According to the Kogi State Police Command, the attackers emerged from the surrounding bush at about 5pm and opened fire on motorists travelling along the route.
A blue Toyota Corolla with registration number GWA 636 CH was later discovered abandoned on the highway.
The driver, identified as Yunusa, was found dead inside the vehicle, while the other occupant was reportedly taken into the bush by the assailants.
The Police Public Relations Officer in Kogi State, ASP Afusat Saliu, confirmed the incident and said security personnel had launched operations in the area to locate the abducted victim and apprehend those responsible.
She added that Yunusa’s remains had been taken to Grimard Hospital in Anyigba for an autopsy as investigators continued to gather information about the attack.
The Commissioner of Police in Kogi State, CP Naziru Bello Kankarofi, ordered sustained security operations along the affected route and directed officers to ensure that those behind the attack are brought to justice.
The police also urged residents and motorists using the road to remain alert and report suspicious activities or movements to security agencies.
Authorities said additional information would be made available as the investigation progresses.
