The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate in Abia State, Chief Okey Anosike, has pledged to support greater financial autonomy for the judiciary and introduce measures aimed at improving the welfare and working conditions of lawyers if elected governor.
Anosike made the commitment while interacting with members of the Nigerian Bar Association (NBA), Aba Branch, as part of his engagements with professional groups ahead of the 2027 governorship election.
The PDP candidate said an independent and properly funded judiciary was essential to the effective administration of justice and the overall development of the state.
He promised to strengthen the financial independence of the judiciary and ensure that judicial institutions have the resources required to perform their constitutional responsibilities effectively.
Anosike also expressed concern about the working conditions of legal practitioners and pledged to introduce welfare-focused initiatives that would benefit lawyers across the state.
He said his administration would prioritise reforms that promote professionalism, strengthen access to justice and create a more supportive environment for members of the legal profession.
The governorship hopeful further promised to improve infrastructure and other facilities required for the efficient functioning of the judiciary, including courts and related institutions.
He said the government should work closely with the legal profession when developing policies affecting justice administration, adding that lawyers have an important role to play in strengthening democracy and the rule of law.
Anosike also highlighted the importance of accountability and transparency in governance, promising to run an administration that would be responsive to the needs of residents.
He called on members of the legal profession and other stakeholders to support his political agenda, saying his administration would pursue policies designed to improve the state’s institutions and promote economic development.
The meeting formed part of the candidate’s wider consultations with professional bodies and other groups ahead of the 2027 election.
Anosike reiterated that, if elected, his administration would make the rule of law, judicial independence and institutional reforms key components of its governance agenda.
