The United States has supplied additional military equipment to Nigeria as both countries deepen their security partnership and strengthen efforts to combat terrorism in the region.
The equipment was delivered to the Nigerian Air Force in Lagos and Kainji by a U.S. Air Force C-17 aircraft in September 2026, according to the U.S. Africa Command (AFRICOM).
AFRICOM said the consignment was provided under a Foreign Military Sales agreement between the United States and Nigeria.
According to the command, the latest delivery is aimed at supporting Nigerian-led counterterrorism operations while further strengthening military cooperation between Washington and Abuja.
The U.S. military also stressed that its support to Nigeria was provided at the invitation of the Nigerian government and was based on respect for the country’s sovereignty.
However, AFRICOM did not disclose the specific type, quantity or financial value of the equipment delivered.
The development comes amid an expansion of security cooperation between Nigeria and the United States, particularly in the areas of counterterrorism, intelligence sharing, training and military assistance.
It also follows recent joint efforts by both countries against terrorist groups operating in Nigeria. U.S. officials have previously described the cooperation as an example of how American support can complement locally led counterterrorism operations.
The latest delivery further underscores Washington’s continued military support for Nigeria as the country confronts insurgency and other security threats, particularly in the North-East.
While the United States has reduced some of its military presence in Nigeria, American trainers and intelligence personnel are expected to continue supporting Nigerian forces, ensuring that bilateral security cooperation remains active.
The latest equipment shipment therefore represents another step in the growing Nigeria-U.S. defence relationship, with both countries seeking to strengthen Nigeria’s capacity to lead operations against terrorist organisations.
