The National Association of Nigerian Students has commended President Bola Tinubu and Minister of Works David Umahi for the ongoing construction of the Northern Bypass in Kano State.

NANS President, Akinteye Afeez, gave the commendation on Friday following an inspection of the project by a delegation of the students’ body. The inspection was part of NANS’ nationwide assessment of Federal Government road projects linking tertiary institutions.

Afeez said the Northern Bypass was significant to students and other commuters because it connects parts of the North-West and provides access to about 10 tertiary institutions in the region.

He said students travelling through Kano and neighbouring states had often faced difficulties caused by congestion on major routes, adding that the bypass was expected to reduce traffic within the city and improve inter-state movement when completed.

According to NANS, the project comprises a 69.4-kilometre dual carriageway, three flyovers and seven bridges. The association said it was impressed by the quality and pace of construction observed during its inspection.

The students’ body also praised Umahi for identifying transportation challenges in the region and supporting the development of infrastructure aimed at addressing them.

NANS further commended the Federal Government for compensating farmers whose agricultural land was acquired for the project, saying the payments would help cushion the impact of the construction on affected communities and their livelihoods.

The association, however, urged the government to sustain the pace of construction and ensure the bypass is completed on schedule.

The inspection formed part of a broader NANS initiative to monitor Federal Government road projects and assess how infrastructure around tertiary institutions affects students and their daily activities.
