Nigeria’s Falconets have been eliminated from the FIFA U-20 Women’s World Cup after suffering a 3–1 defeat to Colombia in their round-of-16 encounter.
The Nigerian side struggled after being reduced to 10 players, eventually conceding three goals as Colombia secured a place in the quarter-finals.
Nigeria started the match brightly and created opportunities in the opening stages, but Colombia gradually took control of the contest.
The turning point came when the Falconets were reduced to 10 players following a red card, leaving Nigeria with a numerical disadvantage for a significant portion of the game.
Colombia took advantage of the situation to increase the pressure and eventually found the breakthrough before adding further goals to put the result beyond Nigeria.
The Falconets managed to pull one goal back, but their efforts were not enough to overturn the deficit as Colombia held on to secure a 3–1 victory.
The result brings Nigeria’s campaign at the tournament to an end, while Colombia advance to the quarter-finals.
The defeat will come as a disappointment to the Falconets, who had hoped to progress deeper into the competition after making it through the group stage.
Nigeria’s elimination also means the team will now turn its attention to preparations for future international competitions as a new generation of players continues to emerge through the country’s women’s football system.
