Nigeria has recorded a major milestone in medical technology after a tele-robotic surgery was successfully performed, allowing a surgeon in Ogun State to operate on a patient located more than 500 kilometres away in Abuja.

The procedure was carried out at Redeemer’s Health Village in Mowe, Ogun State, with Professor Obi Davies-Ekwenna performing the operation remotely using a Toumai robotic surgical console.

The patient, who was receiving treatment at Nisa Premier Hospital in Abuja, underwent a robot-assisted right radical nephrectomy to remove a cancerous tumour from the kidney.

Professor Davies-Ekwenna, a board-certified transplant and urologic surgeon and Professor of Urology and Renal Transplantation at the University of Toledo College of Medicine and Life Sciences, conducted the operation in real time from the robotic console at Redeemer’s Health Village.

The medical breakthrough was achieved through a collaboration involving Redeemer’s Health Village, Nisa Premier Hospital and RoboMed Global.
