Singer Peter Okoye has told the Federal High Court in Lagos that he received more than $800,000 in royalties from the French music rights organisation, SACEM, for songs recorded by the defunct music duo, P-Square.
Okoye made the disclosure while testifying virtually before Justice Alexander Owoeye during cross-examination by counsel to his elder brother, Jude Okoye.
The singer, however, maintained that Jude was not entitled to a share of the money, arguing that the royalties belonged to him and his twin brother, Paul Okoye.
The disclosure is part of the ongoing legal dispute involving the Okoye brothers and their former manager, Jude, over financial matters connected to P-Square’s music business.
During the proceedings, Peter reportedly acknowledged receiving the SACEM payments but rejected the suggestion that the money should have been shared with Jude.
Reports from the court indicate that the royalties covered musical works by P-Square, with the payments becoming part of the wider financial disagreement between the brothers.
The singer’s testimony came as part of proceedings in a case involving allegations surrounding the management and handling of funds connected to the group.
Peter’s admission has now brought renewed attention to the financial arrangements behind P-Square’s catalogue and the disagreements that have continued following the group’s split.
The case is still before the Federal High Court in Lagos, and the parties are expected to present further evidence and arguments as the proceedings continue.
The court will ultimately determine the legal issues arising from the dispute, while the allegations and claims made by the parties remain subject to the judicial process.
