The Northern Christian Association has condemned the latest attacks in Plateau State, warning that Nigerians must not become so accustomed to violence that the loss of innocent lives is treated as normal.
The association’s chairman, Rev. Joseph Hayab, raised the concern in a statement issued in Kaduna following attacks reported across parts of Barkin Ladi, Riyom and neighbouring communities.
According to Hayab, at least nine people were killed in the latest incidents, including five travellers whose vehicle was attacked while they were heading towards Gana-Ropp in Barkin Ladi.
He added that a pastor and another person were also killed while travelling to church in Dorowa Babuje, while separate attacks were reported in Baten Wereng and Ratyidi.
Reacting to the killings, Hayab said every life lost represented a tragedy that should concern Nigerians regardless of ethnic, religious or political differences.
He called on the Federal and Plateau State governments, as well as security agencies, to strengthen security measures in vulnerable communities and focus more on preventing attacks rather than responding after they occur.
The NCA chairman said early detection of threats, effective intelligence gathering and prompt action could help prevent attackers from reaching vulnerable communities.
He also urged security agencies to work more closely with residents, noting that members of local communities are often the first to notice suspicious movements and activities.
The association further called for thorough investigations into the attacks and the arrest and prosecution of those found responsible.
The NCA commiserated with the families of the victims and affected communities, while urging authorities to provide support to residents whose lives and livelihoods have been disrupted by the violence.
