Billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote has explained why his proposed refinery Initial Public Offering (IPO) is not primarily aimed at raising funds.

During an interview, Dangote was asked why, as one of the world’s wealthiest Black men, he could not simply use his personal finances to fund the project instead of going to the public.

Responding, Dangote said the IPO is intended to give ordinary Nigerians and other members of the public an opportunity to own a stake in the business.

“The IPO we’re doing is not that we want to raise money. It is purely to help the poor people, people like my driver, my cook, your driver, your cook, yourself, your wife, and your kids, to have a piece of the action.”

Dangote’s comments highlight his stated intention to broaden public participation in the ownership of the refinery through the capital market.

The proposed IPO has generated public interest as investors await further details on the timing, structure and availability of shares.
