The Akwa Ibom State Government has stepped up efforts to tackle illegal mining activities across the state, citing concerns over environmental damage and the need to protect the state’s natural resources.
The government said it would strengthen monitoring and enforcement measures to prevent unauthorised exploitation of mineral resources and ensure that mining activities comply with relevant regulations.
The move is part of wider efforts to regulate the sector and promote responsible mining practices that can contribute to economic development without causing lasting damage to communities and the environment.
Authorities are expected to intensify surveillance of mining sites and take action against individuals and operators found to be engaging in illegal activities.
The government also stressed the importance of ensuring that mineral resources are properly managed and that communities benefit from legitimate economic activities in the sector.
The renewed focus on illegal mining comes as Akwa Ibom continues to explore opportunities to diversify its economy and attract investment beyond its traditional revenue sources.
The state government said it would continue to work with relevant agencies and stakeholders to enforce mining regulations and curb activities that threaten the environment or undermine legitimate operators.
