A retiring Justice of the Supreme Court has cautioned politicians against offering judges gifts such as cows and rams, warning that such practices could undermine the integrity and independence of the judiciary.
The justice reportedly gave the warning while reflecting on the state of Nigeria’s judicial system and the relationship between politicians and members of the bench.
He urged politicians to desist from bringing gifts to judges, stressing the importance of allowing judicial officers to perform their duties without inducements or inappropriate influence.
The retiring justice also called for greater respect for the independence of the judiciary, noting that judges should be able to make decisions based on the law and facts before them.
He urged members of the political class to recognise that judicial officers should not be treated as recipients of political favours.
The remarks come amid continuing discussions about judicial independence, ethical standards and the need to strengthen public confidence in Nigeria’s justice system.
