An environmental campaign is taking root across northern Nigeria, with the Centre for Information Technology and Development (CITAD) planting 616 trees as part of an initiative aimed at tackling environmental challenges in the region.

According to NewsNGR, CITAD says the tree-planting campaign is only the beginning, with the organisation setting its sights on an ambitious target of one million trees across northern Nigeria.

The initiative is focused on encouraging communities to take environmental protection more seriously, particularly in areas facing challenges linked to deforestation, desertification and the loss of vegetation.

For CITAD, planting trees is not simply about putting seedlings in the ground. The organisation is also calling for greater community participation and long-term care of the trees so that they can survive and contribute to healthier communities.

The campaign comes at a time when environmental degradation remains a concern across parts of northern Nigeria, where changing climatic conditions, land degradation and pressure on natural resources continue to affect communities.

Reaching the one-million-tree target would require sustained participation from communities, organisations, government agencies and other stakeholders.

The bigger challenge, however, may not be planting the trees — but protecting and nurturing them until they mature.

If successful, the initiative could become part of a broader conversation about how communities across northern Nigeria can respond to environmental challenges through local action.

616 trees planted. One million in sight. The question now is: can the campaign grow into a nationwide movement?
