A Nigerian man living in Italy has revealed that he has spent the past nine years making a living through street begging, a practice commonly referred to as “Shoroti” among some Nigerians in Italy.

The man said the income from begging has enabled him to build a house in Nigeria while also providing for his children and supporting members of his extended family.

According to him, despite the negative perception often associated with begging, the activity has provided him with a level of financial stability that he believes would have been difficult to achieve through some conventional jobs.

“I am a beggar (Shoroti) in Italy for the last nine years and I have built a house in Nigeria. I take care of my kids and family very well,” he said.

He explained that the earnings have allowed him to meet his family responsibilities and invest in property back home.

His account has sparked conversations online about the economic realities faced by Nigerians living abroad, as well as the different ways some migrants make a living while trying to support families in Nigeria
