Three vigilantes from Shanga Local Government Area of Kebbi State are feared dead following a reported attack by suspected bandits along the Kebbi-Niger border.
The three men were reportedly returning from Agwara in Niger State when they were ambushed around the Kasabo, Binuwa and Mago communities, across the River Kwara.
Local sources identified the victims as Abubakar Mai Nera, said to be the vigilante commander in Saminaka, Tanko Sarki and Amadu Saminaka. They were reportedly from the Saminaka and Bakinturu communities in Shanga LGA.
Bodies Yet to Be Recovered
According to local sources cited by The PUNCH, the attackers allegedly set the victims ablaze after the attack. However, their bodies had not been recovered as of the time of the report.
Residents and search teams were said to be continuing efforts to locate the missing vigilantes.
The incident has reportedly increased concerns among communities living around the Kebbi-Niger border, an area that has faced security challenges involving armed groups.
Police Yet to Confirm Attack
The Kebbi State Police Command said it was not aware of the incident and could not confirm the report.
Police Public Relations Officer, SP Bashir Usman, said the reported attack was said to have occurred in Niger State, although the victims were from Kebbi.
As of publication, the identities of the attackers and the circumstances surrounding the reported deaths had not been independently verified.
The development has once again raised questions about the security situation in communities along Nigeria’s state borders and the risks faced by local vigilante groups assisting formal security agencies.
