2027: Abuja Indigenous Group Backs Wike, Says Tinubu Has Support in FCT

A group representing indigenous people of the Federal Capital Territory says it will support FCT Minister Nyesom Wike and mobilise support for President Bola Ahmed Tinubu ahead of the 2027 presidential election.

The declaration was made by the Abuja Original Inhabitants Youths Empowerment Organisation (AOIYEO) following Wike’s recent statement that he would resign as FCT Minister if President Tinubu loses the FCT and Rivers State in the 2027 presidential election.

Why the group is backing Wike

AOIYEO Executive Director and FCT youth leader, Commandant Isaac David, said the group believes the Tinubu administration, through Wike’s leadership of the FCT, has delivered projects and initiatives that have benefited indigenous communities.

He said the group would support efforts to secure votes for Tinubu, arguing that the administration’s policies and projects should be considered by voters when making their choices.

The group also said it expects the administration to continue addressing what it described as the historical marginalisation of Abuja’s indigenous population.

Wike raises the political stakes

The development follows Wike’s recent declaration that his political performance in the FCT and Rivers State will be closely tied to Tinubu’s 2027 result in both territories.

Speaking to members of the Apo Mechanics and Traders Association, Wike said he would resign as FCT Minister if Tinubu fails to win the presidential election in the FCT and Rivers. He said he would announce his resignation on January 17, 2027, if that happens.

Wike has also said his focus is on mobilising support for Tinubu’s presidential bid, while political parties remain free to field their own candidates for governorship and legislative elections.

The bigger 2027 picture

Political activity is already increasing ahead of the 2027 general elections, with different groups and political actors declaring support for candidates and building grassroots structures.

The Abuja group’s declaration is one of several recent developments involving Wike and the FCT as attention turns to the presidential contest.

However, endorsements and political declarations do not by themselves establish how voters will ultimately vote. The election outcome will depend on the votes cast and officially declared by the relevant electoral authorities.
