NEWCASTLE, AUSTRALIA — What was supposed to be a joyful farewell for the Newcastle Knights rugby league team turned into a frightening scene on Saturday after a car crashed into a crowd of supporters in Newcastle, north of Sydney.

Ten people were injured in the incident, including several children, as thousands of fans gathered along the streets to see the Knights off ahead of their National Rugby League (NRL) grand final.

Five-Year-Old Girl Among Those Seriously Injured

New South Wales authorities initially reported that a five-year-old girl and a 67-year-old man were in critical condition, while the other eight injured people were described as stable.

A later update from the Hunter New England Local Health District said seven people remained in hospital, with one in critical condition, one serious but stable and five in stable condition.

Several children were among those injured, including a two-year-old and another five-year-old girl.

18-Year-Old Driver Arrested and Charged

Police arrested the 18-year-old driver at the scene. Investigators said early indications suggested the crash was not terror-related.

Authorities have since charged the driver with multiple driving offences. He was refused bail and is expected to face further court proceedings.

Newcastle Lord Mayor Gavin Morris said the driver appeared to have been revving the vehicle before losing control and striking the crowd. Police are continuing to investigate the circumstances surrounding the crash.

Knights Supporters Rally Around Victims

The Newcastle Knights were scheduled to travel to Sydney for their grand final, drawing large crowds of supporters eager to see the players off.

Following the crash, the team diverted its bus from the planned route as emergency services responded to the incident.

The accident has since prompted an outpouring of support from the Newcastle community, with supporters organising fundraising efforts to assist some of those injured.

The incident has cast a shadow over what had been an exciting weekend for Newcastle, with authorities urging the public to allow emergency responders and investigators to do their work.
