Cleric Blames Excessive Prayer for Believers’ Lack of Productivity

A Nigerian cleric, Philip Ojealo, has sparked debate with his criticism of what he described as an overdependence on prayer among some Christians.

Ojealo argued that prayer, when separated from action, responsibility and personal effort, could leave believers unproductive and overly dependent on divine intervention.

According to him, some Christians have become accustomed to praying about virtually every challenge instead of taking practical steps to address the situations confronting them.

He suggested that faith should not be used as an excuse for inaction, stressing the importance of combining spiritual devotion with hard work, discipline, knowledge and personal responsibility.

His comments come amid renewed discussions in Nigeria about the role of prayer in addressing the country’s economic and social challenges. While religious leaders continue to call for prayer and repentance, others have increasingly stressed the need for citizens to complement their faith with practical action and accountability.

The remarks are likely to generate debate among Christians, particularly over where the line should be drawn between trusting God through prayer and taking responsibility for solving everyday problems.

The debate also mirrors recent comments by Prophet Chukwuemeka Ohanaemere, popularly known as Odumeje, who argued that Nigeria should focus more on development and productivity rather than defining its national identity primarily around prayer.
