Police Retirees, Families Renew Abuja Protest, Demand Exit From Pension Scheme

Retired police officers and members of their families have renewed their protest in Abuja, demanding that the Federal Government remove the Nigeria Police Force from the Contributory Pension Scheme (CPS).

The protesters are calling for urgent action on their pension concerns, insisting that the current arrangement has left many retired officers struggling to cope with life after decades of service.

The agitation centres on the Police Exit Bill, which seeks to remove the police from the CPS and establish a separate pension arrangement for police personnel. The bill was transmitted to the Presidency in March 2026 after being passed by the National Assembly.

The Police Retired Officers Forum of Nigeria (PROF) has repeatedly urged President Bola Tinubu to assent to the bill, arguing that police retirees deserve a pension system comparable to arrangements available to other security agencies.

The latest protest is part of a wider and prolonged campaign by retired officers, who have staged demonstrations at government institutions in Abuja over what they describe as inadequate retirement benefits and poor welfare.

In September, PROF announced the resumption of its indefinite nationwide peaceful protest after saying earlier assurances that the pension concerns would be resolved had not produced the expected outcome.

The protesters are demanding justice, improved welfare and dignity in retirement, while urging the Federal Government to act on the proposed reforms.
