A senior lecturer at Ambrose Alli University, Ekpoma, Edo State, Dr Matthew Uwuigbe, has died in a hotel room following an alleged sexual encounter with a 21-year-old woman identified by police as Angela Defa Jacob.

The incident occurred at a hotel in the Mosco area of Ekpoma, Esan West Local Government Area of Edo State, on Sunday, October 5, 2026.

According to the Edo State Police Command, Uwuigbe had checked into the hotel with the woman and later sent her out to purchase water.

The police said that when she returned to the room, she found the lecturer lying lifeless on the bed.

The command’s spokesperson, Eno Ikoedem, said the incident was reported at about 8pm, adding that three people had been arrested in connection with the case.

Those arrested are reportedly the hotel owner, the manager and the 21-year-old woman who was with the lecturer.

Police said Uwuigbe’s remains have been deposited at the Oriaifo Memorial Hospital mortuary, while investigations continue to establish the circumstances surrounding his death.

Meanwhile, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Otunba Mike Ade Aladenika, confirmed that Uwuigbe was a member of staff of Ambrose Alli University.

However, he stressed that the incident occurred outside the university premises and that the woman involved was not a student of the institution.

The cause of the lecturer’s death has not been officially established, and authorities are expected to rely on further investigation and medical findings to determine what happened before his death.
