A death row inmate in the United States has regained consciousness and begun speaking days after surviving a failed lethal injection in Tennessee.
Christa Pike, 50, was scheduled to be executed on September 30, 2026, for the 1995 murder of her classmate, Colleen Slemmer. However, the execution was halted after officials administered two doses of pentobarbital without successfully completing the procedure.
Pike spent days unconscious in hospital
Pike was rushed to hospital following the failed execution and remained unconscious for several days while receiving critical medical treatment.
Her lawyers said on Tuesday that she had regained consciousness and was communicating, although her condition remains serious and her long-term prognosis is still unclear. They expect her recovery to take a considerable amount of time.
Her attorneys also reported that she suffered significant injuries to both arms, including swelling, burns and blisters, during the botched procedure.
Questions raised over execution procedure
The incident has triggered questions about what went wrong inside the execution chamber.
Reports indicate that difficulties occurred with the intravenous lines used to administer the lethal drug. Medical experts have suggested that the drug may have leaked into surrounding tissue instead of entering the bloodstream properly.
Pike’s legal team is now seeking access to records and other evidence from the execution attempt, including information about the drugs, needles and execution procedures.
Tennessee suspends further executions
The failed execution has also prompted action from Tennessee authorities.
Governor Bill Lee ordered a comprehensive independent review of what happened and postponed the state’s other scheduled execution for the year. The state’s corrections commissioner, Frank Strada, has also announced his resignation.
Pike is believed to be the first known person in the United States to survive after lethal injection drugs were administered during an execution attempt, making the case an unprecedented development in the country’s history of capital punishment.
Her lawyers are expected to appear in court as they seek to preserve evidence surrounding the failed execution and investigate how the procedure went wrong.
