The Akwa Ibom State Government has earmarked about 150 hectares of land across six locations for housing development, with 1,048 housing units currently at various stages of construction and delivery.
The Commissioner for Housing, Henry Archibong, disclosed this during a ministerial briefing in Uyo, explaining that the projects were designed not only to provide homes but also to promote sustainable urban development and create economic opportunities.
Archibong said the housing programme was being implemented under Governor Umo Eno’s ARISE Agenda, with a focus on affordable, quality and environmentally sustainable communities.
Among the major projects are the Aviation Village, Doctors’ Residence at Ibom Medical City, Executive and Legislative Quarters, Judiciary Quarters and the ARISE City Social and Affordable Housing Estate.
Major projects
The Aviation Village Phase One consists of 100 housing units — 50 two-bedroom and 50 three-bedroom apartments — and is reportedly 98 per cent complete.
The estate also has a model primary school, a 70,000-litre water facility, 7.13km of roads, electricity, a police station and solar-powered CCTV. Five of the housing units have been allocated to the Ministry of Aviation for accommodation and related supervisory purposes.
At the Ibom Medical City, the government is developing accommodation comprising 50 three-bedroom bungalows and 50 four-bedroom terrace duplexes, alongside a model school and recreational facilities. The project is about 70 per cent complete.
The Judiciary Quarters along Idongesit Nkanga Avenue comprises 50 four-bedroom duplexes, each with two boys’ quarters, as well as recreational and conference facilities. The project is also about 70 per cent complete.
Meanwhile, the Executive and Legislative Quarters at Dakkada Luxury Estate comprise 64 five-bedroom duplexes — 32 for legislators and 32 for members of the executive — and are at various stages of completion.
Affordable housing and compassionate homes
Archibong said the ARISE City Social and Affordable Housing Estate at Mbierebe Akpawat in Ibesikpo Asutan Local Government Area would provide 250 two-bedroom bungalows. The first 100 units are expected to be delivered in December 2026.
The government has also completed and delivered 438 units under its 500-unit ARISE Compassionate Homes programme, while Grace Estate has 236 flats, including 150 allocated to civil servants.
Other projects include 35 duplexes at Ewet Luxury Garden and 31 residences being constructed for local government chairmen.
The commissioner said the construction programme was also contributing to the state’s economy, with between 5,000 and 6,000 people benefiting directly and indirectly through employment and related businesses.
He noted that artisans and labourers working on the projects earn between ₦7,000 and ₦12,000 daily, depending on their roles, while suppliers, transporters, food vendors, POS operators and other small businesses also benefit from the construction activities.
Archibong acknowledged that the housing deficit remained a challenge and said the state government was strengthening collaboration with mortgage institutions, professional bodies and private developers to expand access to affordable housing.
