A suspected notorious bandit commander, Kachalla Mu’azu, and six members of his gang have reportedly been killed during a clash with a rival armed group in Zamfara State.

The incident occurred at about 7:30pm on Wednesday, October 7, 2026, around Mada in Gusau Local Government Area of the state.

According to security sources cited by counter-insurgency publication Zagazola Makama, Mu’azu and his associates were returning from Yankara Market when they were ambushed by members of a rival armed group who had reportedly laid in wait along their route.

The ensuing confrontation reportedly resulted in the deaths of Mu’azu and six other members of his group.

Mu’azu linked to attacks in Zamfara

Mu’azu was described as a prominent bandit commander allegedly linked to criminal activities and attacks affecting communities in Gusau and other parts of Zamfara State.

He was also reportedly associated with armed groups operating in parts of neighbouring Katsina State.

The reported killing is expected to attract attention from security agencies monitoring the activities of armed groups around the Gusau axis, although it remains unclear whether the development will lead to any immediate change in the security situation.

Mada is located in the eastern part of Gusau Local Government Area, while Yankara lies along the Gusau-Funtua axis.

Security situation remains tense

The reported clash comes amid continuing security concerns across Zamfara, where armed groups have remained active in several communities.

Earlier this week, troops reportedly killed at least five suspected bandits, including two alleged commanders, during a separate gun battle in Tsafe Local Government Area.

In another recent development, residents of Bindin and neighbouring communities in Maru Local Government Area protested the reported withdrawal of military personnel following deadly attacks attributed to bandits.

The latest report of Mu’azu’s death has not, however, been independently confirmed by the Nigerian military or Zamfara State Police Command.
