A Nigerian Air Force (NAF) helicopter made a precautionary landing in Benue State on Wednesday after completing an air operation targeting suspected kidnappers, according to the Nigerian Air Force.

The development occurred on October 7, 2026, during an operation in the Ogbadigbo area of Benue State, near the Enugu–Benue boundary.

According to the NAF, its aircraft provided close air support to ground forces during the operation, which was aimed at disrupting the activities of suspected kidnappers and supporting the advance of surface troops.

Why the Helicopter Landed

The Director of Public Relations and Information at NAF Headquarters, Air Commodore Ehimen Ejodame, said the pilot decided to make a precautionary landing while returning to base after successfully completing the mission.

The landing occurred approximately 10 nautical miles from the airfield and, according to the Air Force, was carried out in accordance with established operational and safety procedures.

The NAF subsequently confirmed that the helicopter had returned to base.

Earlier Reports

Earlier accounts circulating online described the incident as an emergency landing on farmland in the Utur Tse-Igboji area of Makurdi, with residents reporting that the aircraft had experienced a technical problem.

An eyewitness, Stephen Ikpam, was quoted in several reports as saying residents rushed to the area and that the personnel aboard the helicopter survived.

However, the subsequent NAF account provides a different description of the circumstances, identifying the location as the Ogbadigbo area and describing the landing as precautionary following the completion of an operational mission. The Air Force’s account should therefore take precedence in reporting the official circumstances of the incident.

Context

The incident comes just days after a separate Nigerian Air Force aircraft crash in Ondo State that killed all 25 people aboard, according to the NAF and Reuters. The Ondo crash has prompted renewed attention to military aviation safety and the condition of Nigeria’s military aircraft fleet.

The latest Benue incident, however, did not result in reported fatalities, and the NAF said the helicopter returned safely to base.
